Antique Thorley's Special Prize Silverplate Serving Set

It all began in the mid-1800s in northeast England with a product known as "Thorley's Food for Cattle".  Manufactured using a top-secret recipe developed by Joseph Thorley, the cattle feed was just the beginning of what would become an animal feed empire.  Thorley's animal feed was eventually headquartered in London and sold around the world using clever names: Ovum for chickens, Rabbitum for rabbits, Grula for horses and their most famous Thorley's Cakes, which promised to produce champion cattle. 

At the turn of the century, Thorley began sponsoring livestock shows as a means to market their animal feed.  The farmers with the biggest, best-looking animals went home with a Special Prize from Thorley: silverplated trophy bowls, oil lamps, cruet sets, creamers and sugars, coffee and teapots, all engraved with "Thorley's Special Prize". 

After a century in business, the family-owned company closed its doors in 1957.

Found at market in the north of England, an Antique Silverplate Serving Set produced as a trophy from Thorley by the Atkin Brothers silversmiths of Sheffield. In its original hinged presentation box lined with brilliant royal blue velveteen and silk, this fine serving set includes two gleaming hand-hammered spoons and a beautiful delicate sugar sifter, which can also be used to strain errant leaves while pouring brewed loose leaf tea into your favorite cup.

With robust lettering in shining gold, the box proclaims "Thorley's Special Prize". The finial tip of each shining piece is formed into a highly detailed bull's head, a sweet reminder of the victor's triumph. Dramatic and exceptional, this very special and rare trophy set was sure to have pride of place in the winning farmer's home and is certain to bring its illustrious heritage and charm to your home as well.
