Antique Silverplate 1911 White Star Line Covered Dish

In 1871, a bright new star appeared on the Liverpool shipping scene. Like a phoenix, the White Star Line grew out of the ashes of a bankrupt sailing ship line to become the fastest-growing and most famous of all shipping companies.
From those early years, it wasn't long before the White Star Line ships, flying a now-iconic red swallow-tailed flag with a white star, were found at ports around the globe. Their transatlantic steamships set a new standard for travel as the the biggest and most luxurious in the world.
From the Oceanic of 1871 to the Georgic of 1932, many ground-breaking White Star Line ships left their mark on the open seas. While vessels like the Olympic, the Britannic and the ill-fated Titanic are well-storied, seventy or so other ships of the line helped White Star become the most famous shipping line of all time. White Star would eventually merge with its main competitor Cunard in 1934 and its last liner, the Britannic, was scrapped in 1960. The White Star Line leaves behind a historic legacy of famous liners which are still appreciated to this day.
Found at a silver market outside of London, we are thrilled to present this exquisite Antique Silverplate Covered Dish once used aboard the great ships of the White Star Line. With an elegant silhouette framed by a gorgeous scalloped effect around the lower dish's perimeter, the lid culminates in a regal finial. Adding dimension and movement to the rim, touches of romantic Art Nouveau stylized vine and scroll work ornamentation punctuate the outer articulated edges.
Streamlined and elegant just like White Star's oceanliners, this antique lidded dish features the White Star Line's iconic house flag logo along with a date mark for 1911 on the underside. Although this graceful dish was produced in the traditional Edwardian shape registered by White Star as a trademark in 1905, the added embellishment was decidedly modern for the time.
Manufactured at the beginning of the reign of King George V, this handsome dish was crafted by Robert & Belk silversmiths of Sheffield, a preferred supplier for the elite passenger line. Further dating this lovely serving dish to 1911 at the height of the Olympic and Titanic era, pieces identical in shape and design have been recovered from the Titanic's resting site.
This gleaming memento with its eternally classic design from the great White Star Line ships brings with it the luxurious spirit of the burgeoning Golden Age of Travel. Sure to take pride of place in any collection, it promises to bring its dazzling and illustrious provenance to any setting.
