Learn more about Swedish American Lines

Founded in 1914, with the purpose of providing direct ocean liner service from Sweden to North America, the Swedish American Lines were the pride of the nation.

Swedish American Line’s (SAL) trans-Atlantic route played an important part in the 20th-century for emigration from Scandinavia to North America, as well as for business and recreational travel. With their distinctive yellow funnels proudly decorated with Sweden's iconic "Tre Kroner" (Three Crowns) within a royal blue crest, the great ships of the Swedish American Lines were renowned for their beauty, luxurious comfort, and the highest quality service provided by her Swedish crews. The level of service was so exceptional that it was not only the company of choice for Scandinavian celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman, but the name Rockefeller often appeared on the passenger list as well.

With traffic declining throughout the 1960s due to competition from airlines, SAL was forced to eliminate their regular trans-Atlantic service in 1970. A short five years later, the company sold off their beloved liners and ended passenger service, with many in Sweden considering this to be a national tragedy.
