Vintage French Change Tray

Vintage French Change Tray

$110.00

As you enter the boulangerie you are greeted with a cheerful "Bonjour!"  You order your croissant and your baguette and place a 10 franc note on the ceramic tray that sits next to the cash register.  You're handed the freshly baked breads, and your change is also placed on the tray along with your receipt.  "Merci bien et au revoir!"

Once a fixture in traditional French shops, these change trays were used to pass money between the shopkeeper and client. The trays were typically decorated with an advertisement - either for the shop itself, or more likely a vendor whose products were sold in the shop.  Today, these trays are no longer common and if found are typically made of plastic.

Fresh from the markets of Paris, this quaint Vintage French Change Tray would have been used for promotional purposes exclusively in Parisian bakeries, sweets shops or the neighborhood grocer. Bearing the brand Biscottes St. Luc, a popular brand of biscuits in France in the early 20th century, the tray also bears the French phrase "Verifiez votre monnaie SVP" (Verify your change, please)

With its horseshoe shape and sunny mustard yellow glaze, it's sure to be a cheerful addition to your antique French bistro collection!

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good vintage condition. Measures approximately 6 5/8" W x 6 3/4" H
