Antique French Apprentice's Cabinet
Antique French Apprentice's Cabinet
SOLD
Found at market just outside of Paris, this exquisitely crafted French Apprentice's Cabinet was once part of a grand doll's bedroom set. With four raised panel drawers and a drop front storage compartment (barely large enough to house a teacup), this piece was the doll's nightstand, a finely detailed example at small scale of the nightstand (then called a commode) that would have stood in both the child's and Maman and Papa's room.
As an opportunity to work in small scale - wasting less wood - and as practice for the finely detailed work of 19th century furniture building, pieces like these were typically handled by the woodworker's apprentice. They were fine opportunities to hone their craft and prove that they had acquired the skills needed for their trade. The perfeclty dovetailed drawers, fluted columns, leafy rosettes, tiny wrap around moldings, and elegantly turned feet and drawer pulls of this piece bear silent witness that a cabinet maker had learned his trade well.
Ideally sized as a cabinet for jewelry or a collection of small objects or perhaps showcased in the library, on the desk or in the entry hall, this delightful and evocative miniature example of the cabinet maker's art is sure to be a stunning focal point, inspiring deep sentiment and heartfelt devotion for generations to come.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 13.75"H x 7.5"L x 8.25"W.
