When King George V passed in 1936, Prince Albert served and reigned as King George VI, King of the United Kingdom.

As his health declined in 1951, Elizabeth started to assume the presence of her father King George VI at various public events. In October of that year, Elizabeth toured Canada and the United States, carrying with her a draft accession declaration in the event of the King’s passing. In early 1952, Elizabeth and her husband Philip set out to tour Australia, New Zealand and Kenya. On February 6 1952, Elizabeth had returned to her Kenyan home when she had heard the news - King George VI had passed and she was in line to serve as Queen. Ruling under the regal name, Queen Elizabeth II, she and her husband, who had become the Duke of Edinburgh, reigned over all of the United Kingdom, taking residence in Buckingham Palace.

Although the newly ascended monarch was officially proclaimed Queen Elizabeth II, her coronation ceremony was held more than a year after her accession. True to tradition, celebrations such as a coronation were not considered appropriate during a time of mourning - both King George VI and her grandmother, Queen Mary, had passed within the months leading to her coronation. As stated in her will, Queen Mary was firm in her statement regarding the planning and coronation of Elizabeth II, stating her death should not interfere with the planning of the ceremony. The most common shade is a pale blue commonly known as Wedgwood blue, but dark blue, lilac, sage green, black, and yellow were also used.

Decorations, typically Neoclassical in style and usually white, were made in separate molds and applied to the body of the piece. Born in 1730 in Staffordshire, England, Wedgwood transformed the humble craft of pottery into both high art and high fashion. An inventor at heart, he perfected creamware, jasperware, and black basalt, designs that carried the elegance of antiquity into the parlors of Georgian England and beyond. When Queen Charlotte chose his cream-colored earthenware for her table, Wedgwood cleverly branded it “Queen’s Ware”—and soon the crowned heads of Europe were clamoring for their own services.

Ever the consummate salesman, Wedgwood pioneered marketing tactics still familiar today. He opened glittering showrooms in London, staged lavish product launches, and understood the power of limited editions. He offered money-back guarantees, distributed illustrated catalogues, and sent samples to aristocratic tastemakers who would, in turn, influence demand. He even kept meticulous records of his clientele to track preferences and anticipate desires—an early form of customer relationship management. At the same time, he harnessed the ideals of his age, producing the now-iconic abolitionist medallion “Am I Not a Man and a Brother?” which married artistry with social conscience.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0165/2136/files/AntiqueWedgwoodJasperwareBiscuitBarrel-1_d3f00ff9-f0b2-4d2c-b77c-432c926b9f5f.jpg?v=1758260799
antique-french-military-frame
Antique French Military Frame

Lovingly collected from a market in Paris during our most recent trip to France, we are thrilled to share this elegant Antique Brass French Military Frame. In 1635, under King Charles I, the postal system was opened to the public, and by 1660 the General Post Office had been established, laying the foundation for a centralized national network. By the 18th century, mail coaches connected towns throughout Britain, though postal rates remained expensive and complicated, often calculated according to distance and the number of sheets enclosed in a letter.

One of the most important early innovations was the London Penny Post, founded in 1680 by merchant William Dockwra. For the cost of a single penny, letters could be delivered throughout London through an organized system of receiving houses and sorting offices. The success of the Penny Post demonstrated that affordable, efficient mail delivery on a large scale was possible.

The British postal service was transformed again in 1840 with the introduction of the Uniform Penny Post, championed by Sir Rowland Hill. His reforms created a simple prepaid rate of one penny for letters sent anywhere within Britain and introduced the Penny Black, widely recognized as the world’s first adhesive postage stamp. Letter writing quickly expanded across all levels of society, and the British system became a model for postal reform around the world. By the early 20th century, the Post Office had grown into one of Britain’s largest and most important public institutions, carrying millions of letters each year and serving as an essential link between households, businesses, and the wider British Empire.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0165/2136/files/AntiqueEnglishBrassPostageScale-1_711b634f-e1c1-48a0-a2c5-7104c7c365ca.jpg?v=1779996587
antique-french-tabac-canister
Antique French Tabac Canister

We were delighted by this handsome Antique French Tabac Canister made by the esteemed potters at Sarreguemines in imitation of beloved English Wedgwood jasperware.

Like its English counterpart, Sarreguemines jasperware was produced in dense, unglazed stoneware and decorated with finely molded cameo-style reliefs.
