Vintage West German Porcelain Oyster Plate
Vintage West German Porcelain Oyster Plate
$30.00
The oyster plate was first used in the Victorian Era when oysters on or off the half shell became both a status symbol and a delicacy. This obsession with oysters lead to one of the most beautiful Victorian dinnerware pieces - the oyster plate. The plates were quite lavish and beautifully decorated. It was not uncommon for hostesses to outdo themselves with plates filled with the half shell oysters - one plate more gorgeous than the next!
Highly ornate oyster plate production slowed down after WWI when the Victorian lifestyle and serving oysters fell out of favor, but these purposeful plates were still produced, albeit less decorative, for use primarily in seafood restaurants.
Produced in elegant, bright-white porcelain these classic vintage oyster plates come to us the venerable Schönwald potters of Bavaria. Some of the plates still wear their Made in West Germany paper sticker which allows us to date them from before that country's reunification in 1990. Just like those from the Victorian era, these plates feature wells for serving oysters on the half shell, while a small center well is for lemon wedges or sauce.
With all the elegance of a bygone era and the modern convenience of sturdy restaurant-grade porcelain, these plates are sure to be a timeless addition to your collection.
