French Franc Bowls - Set of 4
French Franc Bowls - Set of 4
$32.00
Typically thought of as tip plates to leave a few centimes for the waiter, franc plates were actually used in France during the early 20th century as coasters that doubled as a bar tab. For example, if you ordered a glass of wine that cost three francs, it would be brought with the 3 franc coaster. If another drink was consumed, it would again be brought with the coaster indicating its price. When it was time to settle the bill, the stack of coasters with their varying prices would be added up and voila, that was your total!
Inspired by antique franc plates, these stackable franc bowls trimmed in hues of rose, lavender and blue are full of colorful French charm. Perfect for a small serving of soup or fruit at the table, the bowls also make wonderful nut or prep dishes, as well as being a nice size for yogurt or une boule de glace. Sure to serve you (and your guests) in cheerful French style, the options for this versatile set expand even more when combined with our matching set of charming Franc Plates.
