Vintage Edward VIII 1937 Coronation Cup & Saucer

Vintage Edward VIII 1937 Coronation Cup & Saucer

$58.00

On the death of his father King George V in 1936, Edward Prince of Wales became King Edward VIII. Shortly thereafter, the monarchy was thrown into crisis by Edward's desire to marry divorced American Wallis Simpson. Edward was faced with a stark choice: renounce Wallis Simpson or abdicate the throne.

In a radio address offering a rare glimpse into the emotional life of a ruling monarch, Edward announced "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." With that decision, direct lineage of the British monarchy shifted to Edward's younger brother, Prince Albert, who became King George VI on December 11, 1936.

Produced in 1937, this regal Vintage Edward VIII 1937 Coronation Cup & Saucer commemorates what would have been the coronation of King Edward VIII. With delicate edges trimmed in gleaming gold, this fine porcelain cup and saucer are decorated with a monochromatic sepia-toned image of the King set within a colorful, heraldic crest including flowers, flags, and a crown. In addition, each piece is embellished with Edward's Royal Cypher.

This art-deco era set was produced in England at Stoke-on-Trent's Florence pottery works by Taylor & Kent, makers of fine china and majolica. With its fascinating provenance and oft-recounted story, this very English treasure is sure to become a unique piece in your coronation collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In good vintage condition. Cup measures 2.75"H x 4.25" in diameter. Saucer measures 5.5" in diameter.
