Vintage Floral Oil Painting
Vintage Floral Oil Painting
$195.00
We were thoroughly charmed by this vintage floral oil painting, recently found at market. A bouquet of pink carnations and yellow chrysanthemums is gathered in a wicker basket, a few blooms resting on the table, as though the arrangement is still being perfected.
Equally charming is the back, which has been papered with a lovely floral pattern, a weathered note carefully taped to the back in ordered to preserve its message: "Painted for K. Cuelio(?) by H. Gribben in appreciation for all the "extra" favors this past season." Exactly who K. and H. were, and what the "extra" favors were, is now lost to the shrouds of history, but H. Gribben was likely American given the spelling of "favors" and his or her handwriting style indicates someone who learned to print before learning cursive, which was a widespread practice in American schools by the early 1940s, dating the painting to mid-century America.
While the story behind this painting may remain forever a mystery, its charming blooms and warm palette are certain to bring its joys to your home for years to come.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Oil on board. In very good vintage condition. 16"W x 14"L.
