1899 Silverplate Marksmanship Salver

1899 Silverplate Marksmanship Salver

$225.00

An extraordinary survivor of Britain’s great age of competitive marksmanship, this striking Antique Silverplate Salver bears witness to a remarkable chapter in late Victorian military and sporting history. Produced in 1899 by the English firm Roberts & Belk, the handsome salver was awarded to Sergeant J. Mair of the 1st Lanarkshire—a name recorded in period rifle shooting circles as both a competitor and prize winner in the prestigious Kolapore Cup matches of the late 19th century.

Founded in 1871, the Kolapore Cup competition quickly became one of the most celebrated events in imperial military shooting, bringing together crack rifle teams from across Britain and the Empire to compete at Bisley. To distinguish oneself in such company required extraordinary precision, discipline, and nerve. Sergeant Mair’s documented participation and success in the 1897 matches place this salver firmly within that world of elite Victorian marksmanship, when rifle shooting occupied a place of enormous national pride and public fascination.

Mair represented the famed 1st Lanarkshire Volunteers, one of Scotland’s most important volunteer formations with deep roots in Glasgow and the surrounding region. Established amid the volunteer movement of the 19th century, the Lanarkshire units became renowned for both military preparedness and competitive shooting prowess, producing a number of highly accomplished marksmen during the golden age of British rifle competition.

Wonderfully sculptural in form, the salver itself is richly embellished with a dramatic border of scrolling shells and foliate forms that create a lively interplay of light and shadow across the gleaming silverplate surface. At its center, an ornate engraved cartouche records the presentation to Sgt. J. Mair alongside the date 1899, preserving forever the achievement it commemorates. Equal parts decorative object, military trophy, and social history artifact, this remarkable salver offers a vivid glimpse into the pageantry, camaraderie, and fierce competitive spirit of Victorian Britain.

Learn More About Salvers

A term originating in Britain in the 17th Century, a salver is a handleless round tray, often footed, used for serving dishes or glasses. Members of royal households were served their food or drink on a salver after it had been tested for poison, a practice in Spain referred to as ‘Salva’, and the name is derived from this and the latin verb ‘Salvare’ meaning 'to protect'.
