Antique English Silverplate Candelabra Épergne

Antique English Silverplate Candelabra Épergne

$3,500.00

With a palatial presence that is guaranteed to command attention wherever it makes an appearance, we were thrilled to spy this Antique English Silverplate Candelabra Épergne at auction in the north of England. Expertly crafted in glorious cut glass and exquisite silver, every inch of this masterpiece is a true work of art.

As if suspended in air, the upper glass bowl with its dramatic articulated petals and cut edge rests atop a narrow gap that has been coaxed from among the lifelike acanthus leaves that open wide seeming to grow from the upper portion of the stand's breathtaking center column. Perfect to display delicate fruits, florals or seasonal décor, the bowl serves as a glorious finial, crowning the incredible candelabra with a grand flower in full bloom.

Delicately positioned just below the base of the bowl, three arms, each with a sumptuous sconce and bobeche gracefully extend to create an imposing and substantial silhouette. Removable for easy cleaning, transport or storage, the highly decorated arms fit solidly into the base. Clustered romantically around the lower third of the column, resting upon an extravagant footed pedestal, a grouping of three inspirational muses gazes outward in all directions. Draped in flowing robes, the figures add a mythical and ethereal air to the substantial piece.

Just below the lovely goddesses on the lower plinth, a presentation inscription reads:

Presented to
Tho.s Gamble Esq.
By the Employees
Of the Franklin Works
On the Occasion Of
HIS MARRIAGE
Aug. 29. 1861.

Sure to have been a worker of some stature at Sheffield's Franklin Works to have warranted such an opulent gift, it is clear that the thoughtful presentation was meaningful to the couple and likely held pride of place for many generations beginning with Gamble's marriage in 1861. A major works for the underground cementation furnaces used in the casting of steel, Franklin Works operated in Sheffield from 1825 until being absorbed into another operation in 1911.

Whether welcoming guests in the entry, set upon the table resplendent with a centerpiece display or assuming a starring role in your silver collection, this impressive presentation tower is sure to take pride of place as a glistening addition to your home
