With over 150 destinations on 6 continents, Air France is truly a global air carrier. The French flag carrier began in 1933 when 5 separate French airlines merged to form Société Air France. These 5 founding airlines had already built extensive networks across Europe, to French colonies in North Africa and further afield. Air France has always been headquartered in Paris, except for the years during World War II when the company moved its operations to Casablanca, Morocco.
In June of 1945 all of France's airlines were nationalized and in December of that same year, a decree of the French government granted Air France the management of the entire French air transport network. In 1946, Air France hired its first flight attendants and opened its first air terminal at Les Invalides in central Paris. At that time the network - claimed to be the longest in the world, covered almost 100,000 miles. Also in 1946, Air France began direct service between Paris and New York. The nearly 20 hour flight made refueling stops in Shannon and Gander. By 1948, Air France operated 130 aircraft, one of the largest fleets in the world.
Decorated with romantic advertisement posters from Air France's many far-flung, exotic destinations, this delightful set of 6 cork-backed coasters will inspire you to raise a glass to the joy of travel.
