Antique Quimper Oval Serving Dish

Antique Quimper Oval Serving Dish

$78.00

Quimper pottery (pronounced kem-pair) began in Brittany, France in the early 1700s. The pottery takes it name from the town of Quimper, where potter Jean-Baptiste Bousquet originally built his kilns and began producing his hand-painted wares. The pottery's designs reflect the strong Breton influence of that region. Perhaps the most famous design that is typical of Quimper pottery is the "petit breton" or "petite bretonne", a naïve painting of a Breton man or woman in the traditional costume of Brittany.

Entirely hand-painted by the Manufacture de Faïencerie d'Art Breton Jules Henriot or simply Henriot, this oval dish is decorated in traditional Quimper style, featuring a "petite bretonne" at center in her traditional Breton dress flanked by exuberant floral sprays. A colorful laurel garland circles just below the rim and the top edge is finished with hand-painted bands in sunny yellow and French blue.

This charming oval serving dish, rich with history and joie de vivre, is sure to be a centerpiece on your table and a beloved addition to any Quimper collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 9.25" in length x 1.5"H. Handwash Only.
