Found at a silver market in northern England, this classically elegant Antique Silverplate Toast Caddy is a true treasure! Produced by the Cooper Brothers silversmiths of Sheffield, the caddy was made for use in the dining room of the esteemed York Retreat located in Lamel Hill, about one mile outside of central York. Side-stamped with the initials RT.LH. (for Retreat Lamel Hill), the caddy has a looped handle at top for ease of transport while its gleaming arches stand proudly on four feet. 

Founded by Quaker William Tuke in 1796, the York Retreat was created to ensure the benevolent and personalized treatment of those with mental health needs. The Retreat was a revolutionary step forward in mental health care, featuring the first types of occupational therapy and caring for the patients with respect and humanity. It became the standard bearer for mental health facilities around the world.
